Custom Cad Design
A clear design brief explains what the part must do and what information already exists. You can start with an idea, a sketch, reference photographs or an existing model. Y3DM's design enquiry routes let you share those inputs for review. The next step is agreeing on the scope, important dimensions and deliverables before treating a model as ready to print.
Separate fixed requirements from design choices
List the features that must fit an existing object: mounting holes, shafts, connectors, envelopes and mating faces. State their dimensions and units. Then identify the features that can change, such as the outer shape, grip or visual treatment. This distinction makes the purpose of the design easier to review.
- Describe the intended use in a short sentence.
- Provide dimensioned references for important interfaces.
- Explain expected heat, weather, movement or loading.
- State quantity, material preferences and your target date.
Choose useful reference files
The design forms accept STL, OBJ, 3MF, STEP, STP, ZIP, PDF, PNG and JPG files up to 95 MB. A ZIP can organize several references. Label files clearly and explain which version is current. If a model is incomplete or damaged, tell us what needs rebuilding rather than assuming the file contains the intended design.
Photographs help show a shape and its use, but they are not a substitute for measured dimensions. For an existing object, explain whether you want a replica, a modified version or a new part that fits it. Scanning and reverse-engineering scope is reviewed individually; contact Y3DM before sending physical objects.
Agree on what you need delivered
Ask about the formats and edits you need before the work is agreed. A printable export, an editable CAD model and a dimensioned drawing serve different purposes. Do not assume all native files, assemblies, revisions or drawings are included in every enquiry. Explain whether another designer will edit the model or whether you mainly need an STL or OBJ for printing.
For a part that will be revised repeatedly, keep a clear record of decisions and model versions. Identify the dimensions you intend to inspect on a sample, and discuss any fit or performance requirements that need review. A design request does not itself establish a universal tolerance or a certified engineering service.
Move from design to a printing quote
The instant printing uploader accepts STL and OBJ up to 95 MB. When the model is ready, confirm that its preview dimensions match the intended millimeter dimensions. Choose an available material and color, then select copies. Files such as STEP and 3MF belong in the enquiry route unless you export a supported instant-quote format.
Which enquiry should I use?
Use the design selection page to choose the hobby or professional project path. Explain scope and references whichever path you take. For a ready model, use instant printing quotes. For repeat production requirements, use the business batch form.
